Aldis explained everything he could to the best of his ability. All the while, Matty continued to touch the gills at his throat, and the ones behind his ears. He seemed to be constantly checking they were still there.

Aldis had to remind him to be gentle with them. They were as soft and delicate as an infant’s gills. This sort of rough sea water wouldn’t be the best place for him to learn to breathe. Nurseries were used for that, and children didn’t leave for the harsher, colder water outside until they were five years old.

Matty didn't have a choice in where he learned, however. He had five years’ worth of catching up to do if he was going to learn how to properly hide his gills from the humans, prevent infections, that sort of thing.

“So, this happened when you gave me your blood?”

Aldis nodded. “Yes.”

“And this is why I can suddenly feel your and Haelen’s emotions?”

“Yes,” Aldis said. "Before it was one sided. I felt you, but you would not have felt me."

There was nothing else to say other than what he’d already said. He hadn’t intended to change Matty, but he couldn’t get him to start breathing on his own unless he did. He also didn’t intend to take him away to New Atlantis. He would stay here with Matty for as long as Matty would allow it.

Hopefully, his earlier declarations of love were still alive and strong within him, despite what had just transpired.

Matty continued to rub at his gills. Aldis suspected the man would have rubbed them raw had he not pulled his wrists away.

“Matty. This changes nothing. I won’t take you away and you can still live the life of a human. You simply need to be careful.”

“But what about you?”

“What about me?”

Matty still had that near-panicked expression on his face. He appeared so dazed and confused that Aldis felt a pity for him he couldn’t contain.

“Don’t you need to go home? How are we going to make this work?”

Aldis frowned. The thought that he would separate himself from Matty seemed so trivial as to be insulting.

“No. You are mine. I am not leaving you.”

“But—”

“No,” Aldis said, more firmly. He wasn’t going to contemplate it. “I knew the moment I was returning to the surface that I would not go back down. I will not take you from your home. This place is yours.”

Matty blinked. “But you’re a prince. The one next in line to be Neptune, right? The Triton?”

It was always interesting watching Matty try to remember the titles Aldis had spoken to him about.

He leaned down and cupped the man’s cheeks. Matty stared up at him with those wide, lovely eyes. “And I would throw it all away a thousand times over if it meant being with you. My father can find another heir. I don’t care.”

Matty’s eyes watered. At first, Aldis thought he was sad, but then realized the truth for what it was. He could sense the emotions coming off his mate in waves.
